Your Ctrl+Alt+Delete opportunity?

Another “what got you here won’t get you there” book. According to Brian Solis, it is time for a change in mindset. Hence, “Mindshift: Transform Leadership, Drive Innovation, and Reshape the Future”. I liked his books about marketing a lot better. Since then, he has dabbled in life lessons, and his latest book is about leadership.

Mind shift

A book about the importance of having a vision (duh!), dreaming and the art of the possible, The big reframe. The mind-shift: Your Ctrl+Alt+Delete opportunity. From the new normal to the next normal. Wilful thinking. Driven by curiosity and courage. The what if… The will to change one’s thinking, learn and unlearn, and act differently. To question everything, even (and especially) your own centre of reference.

Solis introduces a set of mind-shift practices

  • Become a digital anthropologist.
  • Study how disruptive technologies impact people’s behaviours and how those changes in behaviours can result in massive market shifts.
  • Learn to unlearn. Read the book.
  • Cynicism is the bravado of the faint-hearted, the strut of the weak-kneed, the battle cry of a feeble voice.
  • Follow Elon Musk. Love Elon Musk or not, you have to admit he’s a mindshifter of the highest rank.
  • Have a passion for what you do.
  • Speak up.
  • Share your ideas.
  • Get to know your mind.
  • Combat negativity.
  • Cultivate optimism.
  • Practice self-discipline.
  • Conquer cognitive biases.
  • Cultivate a beginner’s mind.
  • Be intellectually humble.
  • Seek new experiences and inputs to better understand the unknown.
  • Cultivate your sense of purpose.
  • Build incremental momentum.
  • Embrace the promise of “yet.”
  • Make time to keep finding moments to feel wonder.
  • Receive, perceive, weave, conceive, believe, achieve.
  • Record, categorise, substantiate, evaluate, prioritise.
  • Slow down

Transcendence

The book goes esoterically and talks about transcendence and flow. Transcendence refers to the highest and most inclusive or holistic levels of human consciousness, behaving and relating, as ends rather than means, to oneself, to significant others, to human beings in general, to other species, to nature, and to the cosmos. Read “Meta human” instead.

Self-transcendence

Self-transcendence brings the individual what Abraham Maslow termed peak experiences, in which you transcend your own personal concerns and see from a higher perspective. The feeling of limitless horizons opening up to the vision, the feeling of being simultaneously more powerful and also more helpless than one ever was before, the feeling of great ecstasy and wonder and awe, the loss of placing in time and space with, finally, the conviction that something extremely important and valuable had happened,

Perception

It transcends your own identity, causes a shift in perception, triggers curiosity, creates a new opening or expands one’s mind, ignites imagination and helps one see things in a new way, inspires one to become part of something larger than ourselves, sparks a desire to connect with others, and may be linked to a willingness to take more risks and find levels of comfort with uncertainty.

Tune in

In 2014, Radboud University Nijmegen released a paper explaining that the brain works like a radio receiver. You want to tune it to focus on emerging trends. Receiving signals is the process of trendsighting.

Potpourri

Then the book becomes a potpourri of time frames (fad, micro-trends, macro trends and meta trends), hype cycles, questions to ask, time horizons, trend assessment tools, narrative, storytelling, story frames, storyboards and change management. As with “Lifescale”, there are many better books on these topics.

For example

sensemaking cover

WHY REINVENT THE WHEEL AND WHY NOT LEARN FROM THE BEST BUSINESS THINKERS? AND WHY NOT USE THAT AS A PLATFORM TO MAKE BETTER BUSINESS DECISIONS? ALONE OR AS A TEAM.

Sense making; morality, humanity, leadership and slow flow. A book about the 14 books about the impact and implications of technology on business and humanity.
