Climate change is an opportunity hotspot. It is so hot that you can nearly hear it sizzle.
Exponential
I think there will be an exponential change in our climate. The effects will speed up. Faster than we think. It will not be pretty and it will start changing our behaviours and attitudes. It is already happening in the investment world. Non-sustainable investments are now getting a negative risk score. That is why the coal industry is collapsing. Soon other sectors will follow. Investment portfolios will adjust to the new risk profiles. That effect will also be exponential.
Tipping point
We have reached a tipping point. A 90 trillion dollar tipping point. Not sure what that does for a local company in Ireland or the UK, but it does indicate an opportunity hotspot. It also suggests a potential threat to every organisation that will not embrace sustainability principles. That will be driven by regulation, consumerism and large corporates applying and enforcing these principles across their value chains.
Business suicide
Non-compliance will mean business suicide. Yes, it is a burning platform and it is time for you to jump and embrace the opportunity. As an optimist, I think this is the time for your businesses to re-invent themselves and positively transform their business models. Now is the time to capture the opportunity. Doing something meaningful at the same time. The transformative purpose we keep on referring to and was first coined in “Exponential organisations”
Change management
From a change management perspective, this is also your opportunity to transform. The logic is undeniable, it is the burning platform you have been looking for and most of your staff are likely to embrace climate as a cause. Taking a leaf out of “Reinventing organisations” or developing the commitment blueprint that “Originals” is talking about. Or take it to its ultimate conclusion and become a B-Corp. You could too.
Jump off the burning platform
If you are not in you can’t win. Use climate change as a tool for transformation and capture the opportunities that climate change are bringing. And at the same time stop our kids from drowning (literally).
