For three years, I told business leaders to pay attention to AI. That advice was correct. It was also incomplete. In February 2026, I reviewed a book called Superconvergence. Its thesis reframed everything I thought I understood about where technology was heading.
AI is not the main event. It is the warm-up act. The main show is the bio-economy. An economy where living systems become manufacturing platforms, where biology is programmable, and where the most valuable raw materials are not data or minerals but cells, genes, and proteins.
The #mindcandy signals were hiding in the biology
In June 2025, one of my #mindcandy editions described insects engineered as bio-factories — producing pharmaceutical ingredients through biological processes that need a fraction of the energy conventional manufacturing requires. Another #mindcandy covered mushrooms communicating through mycelium networks: distributed intelligence that has existed for four hundred million years, being rediscovered by a species that has computed with silicon for sixty.
Enough of this pattern accumulated that it earned its own name — Synthetic Biological Intelligence. Not artificial. Not natural. A third category, built from living tissue, sitting in a space no existing framework had words for.
Life is becoming programmable. And programmable life is becoming an economic force.
It does not look like what we expect
Leadership teams think about the future of technology as AI. Understandably, it has dominated the boardroom agenda since 2023. But AI was always a lens, not a destination. It was the tool through which a deeper transformation became visible. That transformation is biological: genetics, biotechnology, and AI operating as a single system rather than three separate fields.
From data to soul
#Mindcandy started with data. It moved through infrastructure. It arrived at human consciousness, attention, and embodiment. Then the question got harder. The question used to be: how do we use AI? Then it became: how does AI change how we operate? The next question is one that no business framework was built to hold. If life is programmable, what happens to the assumptions every leadership model rests on: that humans are born, age, and die, that biological and mechanical are separate categories?
That is why AI is chicken feed. AI changed how we process information. The bio-economy changes what we are.
What this means for your business
I do not know, precisely, what this means for your business. Neither do you. What I do know: the bio-economy will not offer the grace period the AI transition did. It runs on biological and regulatory timelines that do not yet exist — which means the gap between “we should pay attention” and “we missed it” is longer, not shorter. That gap is more dangerous than speed ever was.
