How to deal with the tidal wave of innovation. How to deal with the complexity of our converging technologies in the upcoming Intelligence Age. How to live in a world shaped by AI, quantum computing, robotics, and synthetic biology. Those are the questions. Using science fiction, Spiral Dynamics, Taoism, indigenous wisdom, nature, biocentrism and relational intelligence as frames. But also the duality of the impact of technology moving at an exponential pace. Creating a multiplicity of perspectives.
Breakthrough and upheaval
Because we stand on the brink of hyper-tech breakthroughs and cultural upheavals. Unfortunately, humanity is ill-prepared for exponential change. The challenge is not just the pace of change but our inability to intuitively grasp it. Our brains evolved to navigate linear challenges, spotting predators on the savanna or managing seasonal cycles.
Hyper-exponential
It is not even exponential, but hyper-exponential. With AI as the accelerator. Its impacts are deeply entwined with other disruptive forces—technological, geopolitical, environmental, and societal—that together form a web of interconnected transformations. Even more exacerbated by the interchangeability of all these technologies (LEGO). Extreme convergence.
How to manage
How we manage these interdependencies, balancing innovation with sustainability, equity, and resilience, will define the trajectory of our future. This is not just about reacting to the consequences of change; it is about proactively designing systems that can endure and adapt.
Perception shift
Organisations and individuals alike must embrace a Gestalt Shift—a fundamental change in how we perceive and approach the world to navigate this Digital Renaissance. Gestalt Shift invites us to see beyond the obvious, recognising that what appears as a “3” might also be an “E,” “M,” or “W,” depending on how we choose to view.
Future thinking
To be able to do that, you need to start thinking in futures. I call it situational awareness. Watching for the faint signals. Scanning domains such as:
- AI: Automating decision-making and predicting the future
- Robotics: Automating physical activity.
- Quantum computing: Solving computational problems previously deemed out of reach.
- Blockchain: Verifying trust, transparency, and accountability across systems.
- Spatial intelligence: Merging the physical and digital worlds through AR, VR and beyond.
- Brain-computer interfaces: Connecting thoughts directly to machines.
- 3D printing: Turning ideas into physical solutions anywhere in the world.
- Biotechnology: Engineering and reimagining life itself.
Paradigm shift
Together, they challenge paradigms in three transformative ways: shifting progress from incremental to exponential, redefining resource constraints from scarcity to abundance, and blurring the boundaries between human and machine, moving from human to post-human.
Spectrum of possibilities
Futures thinking is about more than predicting a single inevitable outcome; it is about exploring a spectrum of possibilities and shaping our desired trajectory. Speculative fiction, or science fiction, is one of the most unexpected yet effective tools in futures thinking. It is a perfect framework for exploring “what if” scenarios. Scenario planning is another powerful tool in futures thinking, offering a structured way to imagine and prepare for multiple futures.
What to do
- Embrace complexity
- Cultivate Awareness: Actively engage with the world around you.
- Commit to Action: Don’t wait for change, be part of it.
- Become self-aware. It is the cornerstone of progress, whether at the level of individuals, organisations, or entire civilisations.
- Embrace flow, do not force.
- Recognise our interconnection: We don’t thrive in isolation. The changes we push in AI, biotech, or energy affect communities, animals, and ecosystems.
- Aim for true balance: Strive to create synergy between human progress and ecological harmony.
Consider
Some concepts from the book to think about:
- Intelligence is infinite.
- Organoid Intelligence (OI) is a convergence of biology and technology that redefines how we think about intelligence.
- The Convergence of AI and Robotics
- Quantum twinning
- QAI
- Merging Quantum and AI
- The Computable Economy
- If AI reshapes how we think, robotics redefines how we act, and quantum computing expands what we can solve, blockchain ensures we can trust it all.
- The “phygital” world.
- Enhanced Cognition through BCIs
- Biohacking 2.0
- Human labour as a premium service (paying a significant premium to receive care, service, or support from a human worker).
- UBI
- Hyper-personalisation
- Hyper-surveillance
- AI tutors
WAVE
The book ends with WAVE. Watch, adapt, verify and empower. We watch for signals and emerging threats, like scanning the horizon on a long cycling route. We Adapt our strategies and approaches, just as we shift gears for uphill climbs. We Verify each pivot, assessing whether the road ahead is truly passable. We Empower ourselves and others, building the collective push that propels everyone forward.
Watch
Watch anchors us in awareness. In a world overflowing with (mis)information and driven by Hyper Moore’s Law, the ability to discern faint signals of change before they crescendo into disruptive forces is essential. Systemic awareness helps us see the interconnected web of consequences that accompany technological or cultural shifts. In a world of exponential change, signals are rarely loud or obvious. They emerge quietly, often buried under layers of noise. Watching involves peeling back those layers to see the subtle interactions between technologies, industries, and societies.
Awareness, while empowering, comes with its own challenges. The deluge of information in today’s digital age can overwhelm even the most astute observer. To watch effectively is to cultivate an awareness that balances deliberate observation with intuitive understanding. It requires attuning to the subtle rhythms of change and noticing emerging patterns and signals that may initially go unnoticed. Ultimately, watching is the gateway. But watching alone isn’t enough. Awareness without action is like spotting a storm on the horizon but failing to prepare.
Adapt
Today, adaptation is amplified by exponential forces. Adapting also means thinking beyond immediate quarterly results or near-term objectives and embracing longtermism.By weaving long-term thinking into every adaptation, we guard against the risks of short-sightedness, ensuring that rapid implementation of AI, quantum breakthroughs, or immersive technologies aligns with enduring human values and global sustainability.
This long-term approach is especially relevant as most technologies pass through the trough of disillusionment. In other words, adaptation demands that we flow with change while anchoring ourselves to long-term goals. It is not a one-time effort but an ongoing process.
Verify
At its core, verifying is about ensuring that our decisions (whether individual, operational or organisational), technologies, and strategies withstand scrutiny. Not only for functionality but also for alignment with shared ethical standards and systemic implications.
Verifying is a discipline that demands rigorous questioning:
- Are these actions just?
- Are they inclusive?
- Just because we can, does it mean we should?
- Do they harmonise with the interconnected systems they impact
- Am I not being scammed?
Verification must move beyond theory into tangible practice, shaping how individuals, organisations, and societies navigate the complexities of the Intelligence Age.
Empower
Empower is not about control but about unleashing potential and equipping all stakeholders to act with clarity, confidence, and purpose. It thrives in an environment of trust, autonomy and access. Creating an ecosystem where individuals, organisations and societies can thrive.
Excellent book
The book hits the spot and completely aligns with my own views. I wish I had written this book. It is excellent.
