There is a one-in-five chance of AI killing millions
Most boards discuss AI risk in terms of hallucinations, data leakage, bias and compliance. Those are the manageable risks. The harder risks are loss of control, dangerous capabilities, cyberattacks, weaponisation, concentrated power and the industrialisation of misinformation. There is a one-in-five chance of AI gaining dangerous weapons capabilities or causing mass harm that could kill millions in the next five years. You also might want to read “If Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies: The Case Against Superintelligent AI”.
The disturbing part is not whether those estimates are precisely right. It is that organisations are accelerating deployment while assuming someone else—the model provider, regulator or government—is responsible for the consequences. Competitive pressure makes this worse. Every organisation acts rationally by moving faster. Collectively, they create a race nobody fully controls.
You do not need to accept every superintelligence argument to recognise that low-probability, irreversible risks require a different standard of governance
The leadership question
What would your organisation refuse to build or deploy—even if doing so meant falling behind a competitor?

AI risk isn’t siloed: Your governance shouldn’t be either
Most organizations govern AI in isolation, tracking models and agents, monitoring outputs and enforcing policies apart from the rest of their operations. However, AI does not run in isolation because it depends on vendors, relies on infrastructure, drives business outcomes and introduces risk across every layer of the enterprise.

As ancient Chinese observed, “A man of wisdom adapts to changes; a man of knowledge acts by circumstances.” With AI advancing at a staggering speed, we must ensure its development is for the positive, for good and for humanity. We must make its oversight and governance precise and effective, and constantly refine measures to forestall loss of control. We should always guide AI development with human wisdom and international consensus, so that AI can truly become a mighty force that increases the well-being of humanity and advances human civilization.
