Digital transformation #Mindcandy: Artificial societies

Use #Mindcandy as a strategic sensing engine to help leadership teams identify the signals they are missing. It fuels the strategic conversation about what is next. DM “SIGNALS” to find out more.

The next frontier is not AI. It is artificial societies.

We are still obsessing about how intelligent individual AI agents can become. The bigger shift is what happens when thousands, eventually millions, of autonomous agents start interacting with each other. Cooperating. Competing. Negotiating. Cheating. Policing each other.

One recent experiment involved roughly 1,200 coordinated AI agents finding ways around deliberately weakened security controls. Another multi-agent experiment saw groups spontaneously emerge as exploiters, converts, and whistleblowers. The interesting behaviour wasn’t designed into any individual agent. It emerged from an artificial ecosystem.

Digital transformation then stops being about giving employees better AI tools. It becomes about participating in artificial societies. And societies need more than intelligence. They need rules, norms, monitoring, incentives, trust, permissions, dispute resolution, and accountability. The next AI governance problem may be crowd control.

The future fitness move

Map who your agents can communicate with, what authority they have, what incentives guide them, how their behaviour is monitored and who can stop them.

Gartner Predicts 60% of Organizations That Ignore Data Governance Culture Challenges Will Fail to Govern AI Successfully by 2027

A Gartner survey of 223 D&A leaders in March 2026 found that cultural resistance outweighs funding constraints as the primary reason governance initiatives fail (60% versus 40%).

3 principles to bring your data monetization initiatives to life

Top-performing firms use six competencies to develop reusable and recombinable data assets. That, in turn, spurs the development of a data democracy, where a wide swath of employees have the access, skills, motivation, and guidance to build and capitalize on data assets for profitable business outcomes.

The quiet rise of AI technical debt

AI technical debt lives in prompts, embeddings, vector databases, fine-tuning decisions, training data, access policies, evaluation sets, workflow assumptions and model dependencies. Much of it is not managed like software. It sits in notebooks, vendor tools, low-code environments, departmental experiments and shadow AI workflows.

AIoT: How Artificial Intelligence and IoT Are Transforming Enterprise Operation

Artificial Intelligence of Things, or AIoT, is the convergence of these two disciplines into a single operating layer: sensors and devices that don’t just collect data but contribute to decisions, and AI models that don’t just analyze data in a warehouse but act on it where it’s created.
