There is a one-in-five chance of AI killing millions

Most boards discuss AI risk in terms of hallucinations, data leakage, bias and compliance. Those are the manageable risks.The harder risks are loss of control, dangerous capabilities, cyberattacks, weaponisation, concentrated power and the industrialisation of misinformation. There is a one-in-five chance of AI gaining dangerous weapons capabilities or causing mass harm that could kill millions in the next five years. The disturbing part is not whether those estimates are precisely right. It is that organisations are accelerating deployment while assuming someone else—the model provider, regulator or government—is responsible for the consequences. Competitive pressure makes this worse. Every organisation acts rationally by moving faster. Collectively, they create a race nobody fully controls.
